I had the amazing opportunity to talk with an administrator at North Davis Prep today. She came into my work and we talked for 45 minutes! I've been throwing the idea of putting Kaden in a charter school for quite some time. I feel like he has so much potential and I don't want that overlooked. I feel like he deserves the best education available and I want him to have great opportunities. I think by putting him in a charter school he'll be able to access all of the things that could be over looked by going through the public school system.
The two schools that I'm considering applying for are Quest Academy and North Davis Prep. Quest focuses on Technology and North Davis focuses on Spanish. Both of these things are qualities that I think would greatly benefit Kaden in the future. The administrator that I spoke with explained to me that the school still goes over all of the core subjects that a public school goes over. They pull Spanish into the core subjects so that it becomes the second language for the child. She said that if a child enters the school in Kindergarten and completes their education there through ninth grade, they will be able to enter high school and pass, with a high score, the A.P. Spanish test and receive college credit. Hello! How amazing is that?! Not only are they focusing on these things, but she said that the classroom is geared towards keeping the child on the level they need to be on. If they get ahead they can adjust their learning so they don't get bored. How amazing!
The worst part about this process is the lottery. Each year hundreds of students apply to get into the charter schools in the area. You apply the year that your child turns 5. This year, North Davis is only accepting 30 new Kindergarten students. They submit all the names of children who applied to a company that draws them out. The school then accepts those students. If students drop out, they can call you and you can choose to begin classes. I can only hope and pray that Kaden's name gets drawn! I want him to be accepted so bad!
I would like to hear the opinion of those who are reading, it would be great to gather all the information I can! I'm really looking forward to the application process and learning as much as I can about charter schools in my area :)
